Photography – silhouette practices encapsulated the tradition way back in 1800’s. Works became enshrined in 1920’s by photographer Man Ray with innovative abstract serious work.
Throughout the twentieth century parallel history of silhouette photography occupying, an uneasy relation to art paintings. Photographers can loosely be described as documentary mode began in the 1930’s to explore the threshold separating functional silhouette images into art works. In Europe, Henri Carier–Bresson, Andre Kertesz and others produced influential work in this vein.
Any study of photographic silhouette form has to engage with art-photography uses of medium as intimately interdependent aspects of single silhouette stand alone art history.
